doctor -internet says high insulin levels and normal glucose means that one wud definitely get type 2 diabetes in 10 years....my daughter is 4 and overwt ...endocronologist hs asked for her insulin levels....cos she hs slight dark area on her neck...my sister used to hv that as akid and is now 33 without any diabetes...its just that when we were young we never got insulin levels tested...
Hello there, I understand your concern about getting your little daughter for insulin testing. These days little children are also prone to early type 2 diabetes because of the lack of activity like previous generations had. Being overweight at the age of 4 and having the dark area on neck which is called acanthosis nigricans maybe a sign of insulin resistance. There are various reason to have insulin resistance and one of them is type 2 diabetes. Also there are various reasons to have that dark area on the neck not always acanthosis. So to rule out your endocrinologist has asked for the testing of insulin levels. Many people may have insulin resistance for long before they develop frank type 2 diabetes, like your sister. But as all Indians are at high risk of developing diabetes the earlier we are able to diagnose the better. Hope this helps. Thank you.
