Can Dry Cough Be Phlegmy?

My husband has always had bad coughs on and off.this time he has had it for over six weeks.all the dr does is prescribe antibiotics.are there tests to be done to find the underlying cause of his perpetual cough.i am very worried.sort of dry cough but sometimes phlemy.thanks doctor

I would have liked a more detailed history. has he got any fever? is he a smoker? any palpitation? any chest pain? and breathlessness, especially in night? any swelling?

i would also suggest the following tests-
1. ct chest
2. echocardiography
3. sputum culture
4. soutum AFB stain and culture
5. complete hemogram
6. serum IgE
