Can Hemoglobin Level Or Hypertension Lead To Swelling Of Leg?
I am Minhaj age 56 years female from Hyderabad having swelling on my lower legs and there are black patches, this swelling becomes more when I sit down for longer periods or travelling. Swelling used to come and go on its own when sitting is one place for hours but since 6 months there is slight swelling but now there are black patches on the ankle area. About one year ago I had check up including blood where haemoglobin I am suffering from high blood pressure and on medication Amlong A and the BP is under control apart from this I don t have any problem I have undergone menopause two years ago.
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Amlong A tab: amlodipine 5 mg, atenolol 25 mg. Amlodipine can cause ankle /lower leg swelling as side effect. Severe anemia can contribute to lower leg edema by hypoproteinaemia. Black patches is due to venous stasis (may be due to in addition venous incompetence, you are having) in the lower limb, not uncommon in women leading to subcutaneous minor blood accumulation. You are advised to stop amlodipine and switch over to some other anti-hypertensive e.g ACEI ( angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor) or ARB(Angiotensin receptor blocker) and diuretic ( e.g. hydrochlorthiazide preparation). Keep your legs elevated on pillow while in bed.
