Can Increased Sugar Levels During Late Trimester Necessitate Insulin Intake Post Pregnancy?

Hi , I am in my 9th month and only 1 week away form the due date, my post breakfast sugar levels come high, but post lunch and dinner come normal. do I need to start insulin at this end of preganncy, or cna I skip, also what are the consequences. I am currently on metformin 850 mg 3ice daily

That is a very good question and unfortunately there is not a straightforward answer. The main goal of checking blood sugars is to help you have a normal delivery of a healthy 7 or 8 pound baby rather than needing a C-section for a 12 or 13 pound baby since uncontrolled diabetes can make the baby grow dangerously large. The experts (maternal fetal medicine or diabetologists) do not agree on how good blood sugar control needs to be: some experts aim for "strict" control (all blood sugars are in the normal range often requiring multiple shots of insulin per day) and some experts aim for "good control" (more than 80% of the blood sugars are in the normal range) and the research is unclear which strategy is best.

Check your blood sugar regularly, record all the values in a diary and always bring that diary to your doctor visits so they can find a strategy that is best for you.
