Can Omeprazole Be Taken With Ibuprofen At The Same Time? Have Prophylaxis For NSAID Related Gastric Ulcer

Hi, can omeprazole be taken with ibuprofen at the same time as a prophylaxis for NSAID-related gastric ulcer? or should omeprazole be taken before meal once a day and ibuprofen when pain occurs? This is regarding a patient with cancer who has taken ibuprofen exessively and now is experiencing irritated stomach, however, I am not sure about the extent of the irritation and whether any bleeding exists or not. Another question is could this 60 year old patient take ibuprofen at all and if so, can she take it with omeprazole to protect her stomach and if yes, what is the direction on how to take these two medications together? Thank you for your help.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
Now a days trend to give Omiprazole like tablet along with any NSAID medicine to prevent its side effects like gastritis, irritation of gastric mucosa.
At the age of 60 one can take ibuprofen tablet.
If there is h/o bleeding from stomach or severe gastritis, it is better to be avoided.
He can take both medicine twice a day after meal.
Ok and bye.

General & Family Physician Dr. Masroor Mir Hussain's  Response
It is always important that you take omeprazole and hour before the meal. This will ensure that the drug is working when you eat. You can then take ibuprofen after the meal. This will prevent any gastric disturbances.

Yes, Ibuprofen can be taken by a 60 year old patient.
