Can Schizophernia Be Genetically Transmitted?

Hello Doctor , I am 29yrs old female and 5.4ft tall with weight of 80kgs. I work long hrs and have had lower back injury in the past due to accident. Also, recently I have got to know I have spondylosis. I feel my arm and leg numb when I sit for long or when I sleep. Have acute back pain and neck pain. I was advised to take tab (supanac), I have stopped all tablets as I want to conceive. I am planning for a baby but am concerned. Also, one of my inlaws has schizophernia and am worried if that is generic. Please advise asap. Thanks for taking up my query.

Hi, I had gone through your question and understand your concerns

Although schizophrenia has a significant genetic component, the genetics are complex and the interpretation of genetic data has proved difficult.More the close relationship , more increased lifetime risk of developing schizophrenia .In First degree relatives , risk is 5-20 times higher than general population , twin and family studies have revealed increased familial aggregation for childhood-onset schizophrenia and a higher concordance in earlier age of onset in monozygotic compared to dizygotic twins with schizophrenia.

But there is no diagnostic test to know the risk , so better is to focus on overall health of you ,( including no smoking, no alcohol) for a better chance of normal and healthy baby.

Although I am not expert on the subject I have tried to answer your query with
available knowledge of this.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us.

Wishing you and your coming baby a good health.

Hello,
Based purely on your description I feel that you have a combination of factors which make you anxious-
irregular work hours
Weight gain
Fatigue
Postural injuries

The sum of all this is stress. Which makes you jittery and question life's choices. Please rectify your diet and ensure you have plenty of greens, fluids and whole foods. Relaxation techniques would help you clear you mind and relieve your aches. Exercise especially back strengthening exercises would help you improve your posture . Schizophrenia does have a genetic component but it occurs at a parental level. So inlaws being grandparents the risk is lower. Do not worry about it. The statistical possibility of it affecting your child is negligible.
Do not worry and plan your pregnancy.

Thank you for your query.
