Can Shingles Cause Sore Throat With Swallowing Difficulty?

Hi Doc,
My wife (73) has a very sore throat and has had a fever but now temp OK. Great difficulty even in swallowing water. Our daughter (49) has had shingles in here eye. This led us to worry about my wife's condition. Could this throat problem be shingles in her throat?

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.Ratnakar and I am pleased to assist you.
The virus that causes chicken pox/shingles can affect the food pipe and cause esophagitis which may result in painful swallowing.
But you do not know whether your wife has acquired that infection.
The symptoms she has might be due to a simple viral infection.
Let her take a course of tylenol and do salt water gargling for relief.
If symptoms persists, an upper GI endoscopy should be done.
Regards,
Dr.Ratnakar
