Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I literally just moved into a new apartment and there's an overwhelming paint smell. I feel like my throat is getting soar even though I've just been in this apartment for a few hours. I'm nervous there will be other side effects to this looming paint. Can this effect your heart?
On reading your query it is apparent that before you moved to the new house there was no problem.
The smell of paint is usually a cause of distress for most of the people. It is helped by opening all windows and doors and may be leaving it such for a day or two. I donot know the place where you stay (if such thing is ossicle for you or not).
The side effect of such strong smell is usually throat irritation, to gastric upset in most cases. Sometiems the smell ( chemical) may reach the brain and cause dizziness and irritability. Side effect to heart is rarely seen .
But as you seem to be quite affected by it, it would be best to at least put in the fans at full of the home, open the doors and stay out. Do this for few days and stay somewhere else, so not shift or sleep in that house for some time. with time the smell will wean away.
Hope the reply is useful Feel free to ask more question Dr. Manisha. Gopal
