Can There Be Any Connection Between Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism And Bad Acne?

I have suffered with moderate acne all over my face for years. I am on Yaz birth control and have been for 6 months for hormone control but there is no improvement. I also have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, but I had a bad reaction to the medication I was given. I am currently not on any medication for it. Is there any link between that and bad acne that won't go away?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of Hashimoto's hypothyroidism and bad acne which occur when a pore in your skin gets clogged, usually with dead skin cells. Sometimes bacteria get trapped inside the pore, too, causing the area to become red and swollen. Well it could be due to low level of thyroid in your body. You should get your hormone levels monitored. I would suggest you to exfoliate gently once or twice a day with a salicylic acid-based exfoliant. Apply benzoyl peroxide cream or gel for killing the bacteria in the pore. If condition doesn't improve in a week then consult dermatologist for proper diagnosis. Doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics like clindamycin , Isotretinoin or Hormonal Therapy. Wash your face using a mild soap or cleanser and lukewarm water.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
