Can Varicose Vein Increase The Risk Of Blood Clots In Legs?

Are people with varicose veins at greater risk or getting blood clots in the legs? I am a non smoking, 42 year old woman. I've had two major injuries to my right leg and have severe varicose veins in that leg. I'm 5'9 and weigh 230 lbs. I know that my weight exacerbates my vein condition, but am in otherwise good health (blood pressure, cholesterol, etc). I've recently had calf pain in my rt. leg and am concerned with possible blood clot.

I welcome you to healthcare magic for your health concerns
I am Dr Fahim and I will be looking into your problem

I have gone through your question and understood you concern. You are having severe varicose veins and worried about your predisposition for blood clot in your veins. Well the answer is unfortunately YES, you are at greater risk for developing blood clots. Three three factors are important for blood clot formation any where in the body, 1) Hypercaogulopathy, 2) Vessels injuries and 3) blood stasis. You having the 2 and 3 factors, so obviously at increase risk of developing vein thrombus. It may dislodge from here and can create life threatening problems for you. So its very important to get this problem fixed.
Varicose vein is treated by Vascular Surgeon and by General Surgeon with special interest in varicose veins. Treatment options include Ultrasound guided Foam Sclerotherapy, Endovenous Radio-frequency Ablation, Laser Ablation. These above mentioned techniques require special equipment and are performed by only Vascular Surgeon, so these are quite expensive.
Another treatment option which is LIGATION AND STRIPPING of the varicose vein. Its relative simple and cost effective option. This is performed by almost every General Surgeon.

I hope my answer will help. Do rate if you like it.
