Chicken Bone Swallowed, Started Fussing, Bowel Movements

Saturday my 1 year old son swalloweda 1 1/2 inch chicken bone, or at least we think he did. He had it we turned away for a second then he was gagging and threw up but no bone came up. I called the doc on call and he took 45 minutes to call me back. Said not to worry unless he showed signs of distress and his stomach hurts. My regular pediatrician is closed till tommorrow and the baby has been fine till tonight. He has started fussing and he can t tell us what is wrong. He has a virus on top of that... How long should I let him fuss before I take him to the Er. He has had 2 bowl movements and they were fine and has not thrown up since Saturday.

Hi madam/sir,
It can be of real concern for parents if children swallow something unusual. Chicken bone could have caused problem if it impacts trachea when child presents with immediate choking/coughing and breathing difficulty or if it impacts the esophagus- (food pipe connecting stomach) where child presents with difficulty in swallowing and repeated vomiting. Since child doesn't have above symptoms, probably it has reached stomach where it will be completely or partially digested. so swallowing chicken bone should not be the reason for taking him to ER.
But since child is fussy, it could be due to other reasons. If it disturbs sleep, disturbs feeding, excessive unconsolable crying or fever then its always worth to get a doctor's opinion.
Don't worry everything will be alright. Take care.
