Child. History Of Low Birthweight. Frequent Viral Fever, Not Enough Weightgain. Very Active, Intake Of Proper Food And All Other Parameters Normal. Suggest To Increase Weight

Hi,

My daughter was a low birthweight child, born at 2 kgs, and at 33 weeks. She's wonderfully active and phenomenally mischievous, and extremely agile - it's quite a task to keep up with her ! My only worry is that she seems to come down with viral fever every 1.5 months or so, (started when she was 8 months old, continuing till now - 1 year 5 months). Her weight has been hanging around between 7 to 7.6 kgs for almost the last whole year now! All other parameters seem okay - she tries to talk, understands nearly everything we say, imitates, stacks blocks, runs like mad :). I have found calpol to be very ineffective with her - I always end up giving her meftal - p , not exceeding 3ml, not exceeding 3 times a day. Please tell me if there's anything I can do to make her put on weight. We live in Bangalore, and give her only natural food ( no cerelac, etc) - ragi, rice, lots of lentils, baked veggies, and she eats nearly everythign we eat - upma, poha, rice and sambar, chapathi, etc - all with generous amounts of ghee. I'm at a loss .. she'd just crosssed 8 kgs after ages, and now she's back on 7.4. Please help me. :)

Hello,

For the age of your daughter her weight should be around 10 kgs.
With her present body weight she can be classified as moderately malnourished child.
There are many factors contributing for it.
1. She is a preterm low birth weight child.
2. Repeated viral infections.
Considering that other milestones are normal, If she can improve her protein component in the diet that may help her to gain some weight.
