Child Has Blood In Stool, Occasional Stomach Pains, No Improvement With Medicines?

hi. I have a 7 year old son who is having blood in his stool . he also says he has pain in his stomach sometimes. please help! He has no history of any problems at all. This just started a few weeks ago when he came to me and said he saw blood in his stool. Since then it has happened about three times a week. When i took him to the doctor he said it was just an infection and gave us some pills, however my son still has blood in his stool.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

If there has not been any improvement after giving medicines then your son needs to be thoroughly re-examined and investigated to find the cause of blood in the stool. Fresh blood is usually from the lower intestinal tract. The following investigations/examinations need to be done:
1. Stool routine examination
2. Stool for occult blood
3. Examination of the anal canal
Depending on these further course of management shall be advised. It may even include a colonscopy to find the exact site of bleeding.

I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.

Regards,

RKK
