Child Has Diarrhea During Night Along With Vomiting. No Medication Till Now. What To Do?

My 7yr old son has been having diarrhea only during the night for past week & vomiting the last 2 nights in the middle of the night. He seems fine during the day but decreased appetite and by evening doesn't eat at all. Then he wakes up in the night with diarrhea. One week ago I had him at the dr for a rash covered his arms legs and torso, but no other symptoms until that night the diarrhea started. The rash has been gone for about 3 days now.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

The mainstay of treatment in diarrhea is to maintain hydration status of the child by giving sips of oral rehydration solutions like Pedialyte, coconut water, and lemon water.

Probiotic like saccharomyces or lactobacillus can be given orally to restore healthy gut flora.

Monitor his hydration by urine output, activity, and skin turgor.

Consult pediatrician for the assessment and for prescription of medication.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.

Pediatrician Dr. Y V Siva Sankara Murty's  Response
Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

Monitor for signs of dehydration particulary if there are loose watery stools..
They include
1. Decreased skin turgor
2. Increasing thirst.
3. Sunken eyes.
4. Irritability.
5. Drowsiness.
6. Decreasing passage of urine.

If there is blood or mucus in the stool antibiotics prescribed by your doctor may be required. If there is no blood or mucus in the stool and there is no fever and pain while passing stools then antibiotics have no role.

ORS or any other fluid containing salt and sugar prevents dehydration. You can give coconut water etc

Vomiting should be controlled by antiemetic prescribed by your doctor.
Probiotics and zinc prescribed by your doctor will help.

Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
It seems that your child is having acute gastroenteritis and need urgent attention.
He may require IV fluids if loose motions not controlled in time.
Give him plenty of water, Electral powder,
Give him coffee.
Give him lemon, orange and apple juice.
Visit ER and start treatment as soon as possible.
Ok and bye.
