Child Has Emotional Behaviour, Grumpy When Hungry, Varying Levels On Glucose Meter. Exercise Alters?
I tested my 8 year old sons blood on a glucose reader last night and it was 10.9, the reason for the test was emotional behaviour that this is not consistent with his normal attitude. I also see a real grumpy side to him if he gets hungry. I tested his blood today and it ranged from 5.1-9.9, Don't want to be the overreacting parent who rushes to the doctor, no other typical symptoms of diabetes, excess thirst, weight loss, he is always hungry though. Can exercise affect a glucose reading? Thoughts on visiting our doctor?
Although 10.9 mmol/L (around 195 mg/dL) glucose level is high, it alone is not a diagnosis of diabetes. You should test it after eight hours of fasting to have a better idea.
Levels of glucose fluctuate during the day, specially after meals and during exercises.
I must tell you though that the whole high glucose-hyperactivity association is a myth. What can happen is irritability related to a severe low blood sugar count. High glucose does not lead to hyperactivity (studies have shown that).
I suggest you to do a morning test (before the first meal of the day), and take him to a doctor if the value is higher than 5.5 mmol/L.
