Child Has Protruding Breastbone. Is It A Result Of Puberty?

Hi i have just noticed my 13 year old son has a large protruding breastbone or ribcage on the right side,he is growing at an elevated rate and it has only been noticed by others in the last few weeks..Could this be the result of an old rugby injury,trauma to the ribcage area,or is it the result of puberty? Can it correct itself and how long will it be like that for? kind regards,Brooke.

Hi,
As you rightly mentioned most probably the pectus carinatum is due to puberty.Most of the time it is a cosmetic issue and maynot lead to any future problems but in some cases it could because of abnormalitiy in spine posture,some syndromes and in few cases it keeps on getting more prominent with time and sometimes the Cardiorespiratory system which get compromised in which case it is always advisable to be in touch with a thoraxic surgeon.If the chest protrusion with time gets worser braces could be suggested by the treating docter.At present it would be advisable to get him evaluated by his docter so that he could follow him for the condition.
