Child Have Problem In Breathing. All Test Done. Have Been Given Medication. What Could Be The Cause Of This?
We have a 5 day old little girl. She was born at 36 weeks and weighs 6 lb & 10 oz. She did not get to leave the hospital because she failed the car seat test. Evidentally her oxygen level dropped down (into the 50s) and she stopped breathing during the test. Since then she has been moved to NICU and is hooked up to monitors. She has had a couple of tests and discovered she has reflux. they were hoping that treating the reflux would fix the problem. They first gave medicine, for reflux, through an IV then by mouth. It improved a tiny bit but not much. Her oxygen levels still dip down into the 70s and occasionally in the high 60s. Today the nurse said she had a little discoloration around her lips and holds her breath. The neonatilist in NICU is going to start her on caffiene meds this evening to see if that will help. She did have a brain ultrasound earlier today and the doctor didn't see anything that should be causing this. She did see a very small cyst, but didn't seem concerned with it.

Child Have Problem In Breathing. All Test Done. Have Been Given Medication. What Could Be The Cause Of This?
Hi, Thanks for writing to health care magic. There could be many causes for such a condition. One cause could be pneumonia (lung infection). What about her total counts and CRP levels? Another cause could be hylaline membrane disease. This could be because of prematurity. What does the X ray report say? Another cause could be recurrent apneas. Here a baby stops breathing suddenly. Caffiene that was started for your baby helps in such a scenario. Continue to ask further queries as required. Hope this helps. Take care.
