Hi there,
Thank you for choosing HCM. Will be glad to help.
Allergic reactions to insulin analogs like
humalog are rare though they can occur.
Firstly, the best way to handle this situation is to make sure that your daughter is actually allergic to insulin.
There are a couple of things to find out: Is she allergic to latex, is she allergic to the alcohol wipes that you use. Has she been suffering from a viral illness that may have caused her
rash at the same time or was she on another medicine that she might have developed an allergic reaction to.
Secondly, if all the above are negative and there is no other reason for her rash that has been found then, : since
insulin allergy is not easy to deal with, there are some tests that can be done to be definitive whether it is true insulin allergy. Sometimes the allergy can be due to ingredients in the injection other than insulin itself which can also be confirmed by allergy testing.
I would suggest that she be taken to an allergist/immunologist to have an intradermal skin testing to different insulin preparations and its ingredients. Also, some blood tests like IgE
antibodies to insulin can be done.
If she has developed a true allergy to humalog, then she will need to try other insulin preparations especially those ones for which she has negative skin testing.
Discuss with your doctor as to how to best go about dealing with this situation.
Hope this piece of information helps.
Regards,
Dr. Sumeet.
