Hello, thank you for using Healthcare Magic!
It sounds like these lab test results were a surprise to everyone! From the information you have given me, your mother very likely has
diabetes. A fasting blood sugar greater than 126 on two separate occasions would confirm this diagnosis. Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to keep sugar levels in the blood normal. High blood sugar levels lead to serious problems in many different parts of the body including the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes, stomach/intestines and others.
The usual treatment for diabetes is with pills in the beginning. As the disease progresses, it is frequently necessary to begin injecting
insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced in the
pancreas that moves sugar from the blood into the cells.
If your mother turns out to have diabetes, she will need to be treated for
high cholesterol as well.
LDL should be no greater than 100 in diabetic patients, and in some (who have severe
heart disease, for example) no greater than 70.
Here is a link to some excellent information designed to help patients and their families learn about this disease: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/diabetes/article_em.htm
I hope I have given you some useful information, and wish you the best of health.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kinney
