Clogged Nostril At Night, Sore Throat, Nose Bleeds, Chronic Halitosis. Sinus Rinse Done. Treatment?
For past 4 years I have had one nostril clogged, especially at night, and I have been using Children’s Otrivin drops to sleep undisturbed. Recently started using Flixonase, but still awake after 4 hours sleep. Three weeks ago I had a sore throat , which has subsided, except now feels sore only when I swallow . Recently saw blood smears in one nostril when I wipe with tissue, but not present now. I also seem to have chronic halitosis . Whenever I perform a sinus rinse (Neti pot), I feel better for a few hours then get terribly congested for many days after. What can be my problem?

I am Dr Ravinder sharma . On the basis of the information provided I would advise you to stop flixonase nasal spray and nose drops . It seems you have got an acute infection in nose and sinuses. I would advise you for a ENT consultation and a X ray of the sinuses. The focus of infection in nose may be causing problems in your throat.

HI I have gone through your mail, as you said that you are having nasal blockade more on right side and after nasal washing you feel better,you are having halitosis also, all these symptoms are for last four years. After listening your story it appears that you have some obstructive pathology in your right nose,this can be diagnosed by examination and possibilities are - Deviated nasal septum to right side, polyp in right nose, Turbinate hypertrophy, sinusitis right side. To pin point the possibilities you should go for these investigations (1) C.T.scan paranasal sinuses, (2) culture and sensitivity of throat swab. After this you should contact your E.N.T.specialist for complete examination of nose, nasopharynx, mouth cavity including dental & oral heygine,oropharynx and laryngopharynx. After this much one can co-relate the examination finding with inferences of investigations than we will reach the final diagnosis and plan for treatment.Thanks.
