Continuous Heavy Bleeding After A Gap Of Years. Pelvic Sonogram Shows Thickened Endometrium, Canal Polyp. Possible Cause?
Hello. It has been two years since my last period and just recently I had heavy bleeding for 14 days.My pelvic sonogram showed thickening of the endometrium up to 2.0cm with a vascular pedicle suggesting a possible endometrial canal polyp . 3.5 simple appearing right adnexal cyst. No adnexal masses or free fluid is identified.Gynecological consult with hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy has been done and am awaiting results. Can this be caused by the polyp?
Hello! Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I presume the reason you haven't had any periods for two years is because you're menopausal. (Other conditions, such as autoimmune illnesses and thyroid disease, could also account for a long hiatus in menstruation.) If that's the case, your sonogram is a little worrisome. An endometrial canal polyp could certainly account for your episode of bleeding, but that polyp could be part of a larger problem. One of the caveats in gynecologic medicine is that any vaginal bleeding in a postmenopausal woman must be presumed due to uterine cancer until proven otherwise. That's why your gynecologist has performed your hysteroscopy and endometrial biopsy: when detected early, uterine cancer is 100% curable.
Hopefully your results will be back soon and you'll have some definitive answers. I hope things go well for you!
