Cough And Expectoration. Done CT Scan Of Brain And Thorax. On Eptoin. Help

My mother is aged 85 yrs and was recently admitted for cough and expectoration. She is very bony and thin. Since the cough was not due to any infection, the doctor asked for a CT scan of thorax and FNAC biopsy. Report gave a very speculative report of having lesions and neoplastic ??, possibility of adeno carcinoma . The same night after biopsy my mother had severe breathlessness and was under oxygen . Morning she was taken to ICU . Next day she came out with an additional gift i.e., hemi plegia of right limb and arm and she had lost her speech, recognition etc. Again they asked to have a CT Brain Scan. Opinion was hypodense area seen in the left lobe of the brain temporal region with focal encephaloma. Now doctors have told us to get discharged and maintain the patient at home itself giving the following drugs. 1. Eptoin 100, 1-0-1; Strocit Plus 500, 1-0-1; Amlong 10mg, 1-0-0; Clopilet 75, 0-1-0; Aztor 10mg, 0-0-1; Deriphyline, 1-0-1; Pantocid D, 1-0-1; Clistin Syrup, Potklor syrup. Does she improve and are the medicines OK for her age? I shall be highly thankful if you can provide your valuable guidance on this matter. Thanking you. Dr. M.N.Manjunath, Ph.D (Food Science)

Hello Dr. Manjunath,
Thanks for coming to HCM. Sorry to hear about your mother's condition. Your description of her problems and test reports indicate that she has cancer of lung with possible extension (metastasis). Taking into consideration her age, her general condition and all other problems, your doctor has adviced palliative care & treatment, which does not directly treat the main cause/disease but try to improve quality of life of the patient till she is alive. You can give her the adviced medicines and give her best possible general care at home. Simply keeping her admitted in hospital might not help her condition further and so she was sent home. You can always take second opinion from other oncologist and discuss other options.
Wish your mother better health.

Hi man150

I can feel your concern but sorry your mother is probably in stage 4 lung cancer with brain metastasis.
Doctor has prescribed palliative medicine which is just symptomatic management.
Too much of invasive tests will not be appropriate for her age.
Take a second opinion from oncologist, whether chemotherapy can be given or not as per her performance scale. If kidney function is normal he may advise for cisplatin plus paclitaxel/etoposide which is taken three weekly for a total of 4-6 cycles....

best wishes

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

Sorry to hear the sad story
Your mother has Lung cancer with brain secondary.
There is no cure and the outcome is bad.
At this age and condition, any aggressive approach could only hasten the deterioration
Tender Loving care, pain relief and prayer alone are feasible at this situation...

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
