Could B-12 Deficiency Cause Leukopenia?

Can leukopenia be caused by B-12 deficiency? Would this possibly cause low neutrophils and Lymphocytes. My question actually relates to my 8 year old adopted dog who started running a fever very suddenly and his blood work showed a dramatic drop in WBC. He had normal WBC 2 months ago and had no symptoms of illness until Saturday December 10. I want to ask for a check of his B12 level along with all the other tests he is having.

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your clinical history and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Vit B12 is known to cause pancytopenia as it can affect nucleic acid function of all cells.
2. The blood cells are rapidly proliferating and are usually the first to get affected.
3. Along with luekopenia, you can have anemia or thrombocytopenia or both.
4. Therapy with Vit B12 will improve the levels of hemoglobin.

Hope it helps.

Any further queries, happy to help again.
