Could Balance Problems Be Due To Inner Ear Infection?

hi. my boyfriend loses his balance and veers to the right when he's on the running machine. He's exercised for years, but this is a relatively new thing.
my mother has suggested his weight loss (over some time), I suspect an inner ear infection though he has no other symptoms. Do you have any ideas what it could be?
