Could Heavy Periods With Big Clots Be Due To Intake Of Multiple I Pills?
hello doctor,
my gf has taken 3 ipill in september. everything went normal but her periods after that changed. she is experiencing very heavy flow this time and she is passing huge clots. even her lasts month period was heavy and contained big clots..
please tell me whats going on? is it because of the pill and is it bad??
I pill which is an emergency contraceptive pill contains Levonorgestrel in higher dose, i.e. 1.5 mg compared with regular hormonal pills, which contain 100 to 150 micro-grams. Repeated intake of emergency contraceptive pills can affect the menstrual cycles due to the high dose of hormones in it. According to literature, there should be at-least two month gap between two emergency contraceptive pills.
Now, if the bleeding continues, better to consult your gynecologist once and let your girlfriend undergo ultrasound. This will help in ruling out any other factors for heavy bleeding. Then she can go for anti-fibrinolytic drugs, with your doctor's advice. Which can help in decreasing the bleeding. Better to avoid emergency contraceptives for two to three months, till the menstrual cycles and flow regularize.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
