Could Severe Sulphur Burps And Nausea In A Diabetic Patient Be Caused By Metformin Or Amaryl Medication?
79 year old male. Has heart condition (pacemaker). Type 2 diabetes. Current meds are extensive. Takes metformin, invokana, and amaryl for diabetes. Last night endocrinologist started him on Humulin N. Today has severe sulphur burps. Now progressed to mild nausea, but no vomiting yet. Should we go to ER, or just wait to see reg Dr in am?
A diabetic patient with hiccups , and acetone smell in breath (that you might be refering to as sulphur burps) may be a sign of a serious condition called diabettic ketoacidosis. Metformin can cause problems , if used in a diabetic patient with diabetic nephropathy.
At this point of time , he should be taken to ER , and should get investigated for Diabetic ketoacidosis and renal failure. Don't take any chance , it might be simply a gastritis , but it's always better to be sure.
