Could Swelling In Ankle Be Due To A Broken Ankle?

My son hurt his ankle at school. He is 9. Said another child stepped on his foot when he was running and he pulled it away and now it's swollen on the outside ball of his ankle. Hurts to the touch and he is not walking on it. No bruising or anything yet. Could it be broken?

Pediatrician, Pulmonology 's  Response
Unless there was a lot of force with the impact, it is not that likely to be broken. It is more likely that he has a sprain. For a sprain, an ice pack and elevating the foot may relieve the pain. Motrin is also helpful for pain caused by a sprain or muscle ache. If the pain does not get better in 24-48 hours, he may need an x ray to determine whether it is actually broken. Please give your pediatrician a call to follow up.
