Cramp Or Tightness Below Knee, Occurs During Night. Reason?

Below my knee in the night or sometimes when I am laying flat on my back, I get a cramp or tightness feeling running down the outside of my leg below the knee. It feels like there are tight cords. If I stand on them them stop sometimes or times I apply heat on rub them. But they recur during the night about an hour or so later. During the day when I am active I do not experience it.

Hello,
welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Your nocturnal cramp in lower limb can occur in following conditions:
-Restless leg syndrome
-Stress and Anxiety
-Vitamin deficiency. Specially B12 and Vitamin D.

It is better to start some multivitamins and relaxation exercise (in presence of anxiety). If symptom do not relieve you can meet nearby neurologist.

Wish you good health and all the best.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your description of symptoms are typically suggestive of Nocturnal muscle cramps.

Most of the time, night leg cramps occur for no known reason, and they're usually harmless. In general, night leg cramps are likely to be related to muscle fatigue and nerve problems.

In rare situations, night leg cramps can be associated with an underlying disorder, such as peripheral artery disease, diabetes or spinal stenosis.

Self-care activities that might help prevent night leg cramps include:
• Drinking plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration
• Stretching your leg muscles or riding a stationary bicycle for a few minutes before you go to bed
• Massaging the cramped muscle with your hands or with ice
• Taking a hot shower or warm bath

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
