Diagnosed With Pallindromic Arthiritis. Prescribed Gupisone. Allergic To Asprin. Safe To Take Gupisone?

Hi Doctor,
My husband has recently been diagnosed with pallindromic arthiritis. He has been advised to take gupisone (prednisone) for 2 weeks. I just want to know if its ok to take this medicine for 2 weeks because of the risk of adrenal insufficiency developing? He's also allergic to the aspirin so is it allright for him. Thanks

Hi and thanks for the query,
there is actually no risk of adrenal insufficiency occurring while he is on treatment. Adrenal insufficiency becomes a concern when he stops long term steroid therapy as prednisolone abruptly. This is very important for stoppage of the drug is supposed to be gradual. Secondly, taking prednisolone only for two weeks should not be real concern with respect to actually developing adrenal insufficiency. This complication is usually associated with long term corticosteroid therapy.
Cross reactions between Aspirin and Prednisolone are rare. I think its safe for him to take Prednisolone. But prednisolone could cause also gastric irritation as can do Aspirin. If that s the concern, antacids and proton pump inhibitors being included in the treatment could be useful.
Thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.
