Discomfort When Walking After Rolling Leg. Ankle Swelling, Bruising. Sprain Or Fracture?

I was running and slipped in mud. In an attempt to avoid falling I put my foot out and it rolled toward the inside of the leg (right one). My body weight (165lbs) went on it and during the roll there was a loud pop. Afterwards I could walk on it but with discomfort. The next day I am able to walk on it but with medium discomfort. There is minor swelling around the ankle with minimal bruising at this point. How can I tell between a sprain and a fracture/break? Thanks, Mark.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The discomfort and swelling in the ankle is likely to be due to a soft tissue injury. However it is best to rule out the bone injury after a proper examination and X-rays.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
