Hello,
Heart valve replacement is a major operation during which blood has to diverted away from heart and also external pump has to be used to take over the function of heart. If during the operation, for any reason, if blood does not reach brain for a few minutes then it will suffer damage. Probably your father in law had such complication during operation. it is a well known complication of the surgery and he was unfortunate to have it. There is nothing much except the supportive medical care which can be done once a person is brain dead.
Good luck.
