7 days ago I ruptured my eardrum and have been on amoxocillan 2 times a day since. I still have little hearing on that ear and my ear itches daily and i still get little ear pains. Is that ok????
1. Get an ear examination done from your local ENT Specialist because the ear is a delicate structure and difficult to repair and restore hearing loss if the damage is in the inner ear. A PTA (Pure Tone Audiogram) will help differentiate conductive hearing loss (due to rupture of your ear drum) or mixed / sensori-neural haring loss due to concussion of the delicate inner ear. The latter type requires early and aggressive treatment.
2. If your hearing loss is purely conductive, part of it is due to edema of the ruptured ear drum and your hearing will return as it heals. This may require a few weeks. However to see that the healing is progressing and that there is no infection, you must keep a weekly follow up with your ENT specialist.
3. Itching is also a sign of healing or a fungal infection as the middle ear which is exposed through the rupture ear drum is normally always wet. Avoid letting water into the affected ear while bathing.
4. Rarely, if the rupture is large, the ear drum may fail to heal completely and then requires surgery to close the defect.
