Fell And Hit Leg. Swollen, No Cuts. Area Turning Red. Veins Are Dark. Bruise On Ankle. Suggestions?
last weekend my boyfriend raced my 12 yr. old son. When they got to the barn he fell and hit his leg it immediately started to swell on the top off his shin b did not have a cut. Thru the week he worked on it and where he hit his leg is turning red, now the veins in the back of his legs are turning dark and he has a big bruise on his ankle b he didn't hit his ankle. He went to urgent care and the physician said she didn't know what the bruise on his ankle was from.. Could you clue us in on what the bruise could be, the whole bottom of his leg is swollen.
Hi and thanks for the query, He needs a complete clinical review. It might be necessary to know how the pain has been evolving. Persistence in the intensity of the pain or an increase in its intensity could be a manifestation of a serious sprain or a fracture. Doing an X ray is a simple, cheap and sure way of excluding a possible fracture. Bruises especially covering zones of tenderness are indirect signs of serious trauma of fractures. However, it is not rare to have bruises in children but the healing and recovery in them is usually good and uneventful. Thanks and hope this helps. Kind regards, Bain MD
