Fell From Wheelchair, Cheek And Eye Swollen, Applied Ice, Skin Turns To Black And Blue
My handicap daughter was in her wheelchair and fell to the right off the curb in her wheelchair. Someone was getting the mail and only locked one brake and me daughter rolled off the curb and fell on her right side. Her cheek and eye swelled. Applied ice and is now black and blue. She is wanting to sleep . Did she have a concussion and if she did should she be seen.
Dear cruzd55, Thanks for the question. The kind of injury that your daughter seems to have sufferred has caused blood to accumulate beneath the skin of her eyelids and cheek which is known as black eye. This will require treatment with local antibiotic eye drops along with systemic antibiotics and anti inflamatory medication to reduce the swelling and the pain. But what needs immediate attention is her feeling of drowsiness which might suggest some form of injury to the brain or structures inside the skull. This requires immediate attention preferably at a trauma care center.
