Fever Increased In The Night, Giving Calpol, Ibugesic Plus. Why Is It Not Working ?
I am giving 6ml calpol 250mg to my 5+ years son of around 20kg since yesterday. yesterday i gave 6 hourly and the temp was under control. but night he was having fever 101.8F. I gave same dose but it didn't reduce the fever. then after 5 hours I gave Ibugesic plus 10ml. now temp is normal. what could be the reason for calpol not working in night.
It is not that Calpol (paracetamol) was not working. Paracetamol reduces the temperature but does not bring it to normal. As paracetamol has an effect for a shorter period than ibuprofen (Ibugesic or Ibugesic Plus) the temperature soon rises compared to ibuprofen.
I hope I have answered your query to your satisfaction.
This is actually quite normal as our body temperature when we are well rises and falls with a regular rhythm, being lowest in the early morning and higher in the evening. This is why he always has more fever in the evening and therefore is nothing to be concerned about, especially since fever is never harmful anyway. More important is the underlying cause of the fever and if it persists his doctor should take a look at him.
Rarely paracetamol may not be able to control temperature. Then we normally add some of those NSAIDS. Some times tepid sponging may also help in such cases.
Does your kid have any other problem? What are the other complaints associated with fever in your kid? Is there any history of cough or cold? Does your child have burning urination and frequency of urination? Does his throat hurt while swallowing?
Further management of the fever depends on the basic problem that is responsible for the fever Continue to ask further queries as required. Hope this helps. Take care. Dr Y V Siva Sankara Murty M.D.(Pediatrics) Associate Professor of Pediatrics
