Fractured Hip And Bed Rest. Advised To Take Acetaminophen For Pain Relief. What Type Of Acetaminophen Should Be Taken?

Hi, your help and guidance will be very helpful on the following case. My mother is 77 and has recently fractured her hip. She lives in Tanzania and has very limited access to treatment. She has been told that the fracture will hopefully heal in in 6-8 weeks with bed rest. She has had her ankle plastered to help keep the leg straight so that the fracture heals correctly. In the meantime she is bedridden. The Dr is recommending her to take Acetomynophen for pain relief. She is a fragile lady who does not drink. Will this help? What type of Acetomynophen should she take. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Maddy

Hi,
The usual treatment for a fractured hip is surgery to insert metalwork. If the fracture is left to heal naturally, this can take some time, perhaps longer than 6 to 8 weeks before your mother will be able to walk. Whilst she is bedridden, she will need a lot of nursing care. This needs to include care of her skin to avoid bed sores, good nutrition so her bones will heal. Pain relief can include Acetomynophen and her own doctor will need to advise on the type as it depends on her weight and general well-being. She will need regular physiotherapy to keep her joints mobile. She needs to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.
I wish her good luck for her recovery.

Dr K A Pottinger
