Fractured Metacarpal In The Hand After A Fall. Pain While Gripping And Sore Forearm Muscle. Not Healed?

I fractured the base of my 5th metacarpal in my hand in a fall. Ortho put me in a vast and after 5 days I was back at the ER had no feeling in my index finger so they removed the cast and pain went away. Ortho decided a splint would be better so I wore that for three and half weeks. Have had it off for a week and still experiencing pain while gripping and moving my wrist and my top of my forearm muscle is till really sore. Worried I am not properly healed.

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The mild pain that you are having is due to a post traumatic stiffness. You need to have a hot fomentation and do mild physiotherapy exercises to take care of this pain during the movement. Mild pain killer will also help.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Venkat Banerjee's  Response
Hi, it is over a month now since the fracture, almost 6 weeks. So in all probability your fracture must be in the final stages of healing. The pain you experience is due to stiffness as a result of plaster & splint immobilization, and is not uncommon and is a passing phase. But still, it is always a good idea to take an X-ray to make sure that everything is in order.
