Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am having a lot of anxiety lately. I know that my mother has severe anxiety but every time I speak with my physician they dismiss my questions of possibly getting on a medication to help calm my nerves. I have anxiety attacks 3-4 times a week. It does not have a specific trigger, but is random to where I cannot feel these anxiety attacks coming. My breath gets taken away, I have racing thoughts, and sometimes have extreme fear. Are there any recommendations, or anything you may do that could help with my situation? Thank you.
For your problem the following differential diagnosis could be considered -
1. Anxiety disorder
2. Thyrotoxicosis
3. Hypoglycemia
4. Drug or alcohol withdrawal
5. Cardiac arrhythmia
But from my point of opinion you may be suffering from one of the anxiety disorders known as Panic disorder.
Treatment that may help you include -
1. Relaxation like yoga, meditation
2. Some drugs like Clonazepam may help
But before having any treatment you must consult with a Psychiatrist.
Dear szk0010,
Hi! From the description you have given to us, you seem to be apparently suffering from an Anxiety disorder like Panic disorder. However the final diagnosis can be made only after a detailed assessment by a psychiatrist. After the assessment, you maybe started on either psychotherapy or behavioral therapy (CBT, Relaxation techniques) or drugs to improve the symptoms. But all said, you should surely visit a Psychiatrist.
All said, believe me that its not a serious condition and should improve with proper treatment. Keep the faith and you should be fine.
