Had Blood Drawn From Arm. Felt Numb. Having Burning Sensation In Wrist. Cure For Symptoms

Had blood drawn from my arm on Tuesday. I immediately felt a numb feeling down arm and into thumb lasting for possibly 5 to 8 seconds but they had no problem getting the blood from my vein. Over the next couple of days i am feeling a burning sensation in my wrist (on thumb side) espicially if my hand is moving back and forth as in trying to towel dry my hair. What could this be?

Hi and welcome to HCM. Thank you for your query.
It odesnt sound serious. It can be temporary nerve damage by needle but everything should pull back in short time. Try not to exercise or use your hand to much till pain subside. Also you may take some of the non steroid painkillers, keep your hand elevated and apply cold compresses if there is swelling. If you notice redness and swelling of upper arm you should visit doctor as there can be infectiob, Wish you good health.

Hi, thanks for asking in Healthcare Magic.

Accidental injury to a branch of median nerve in the cubital fossa (place where the blood was withdrawn for you) has resulted in numbness, weakness of index finger and thumb. Median nerve lies close to the blood vessel in the cubital fossa and this nerve is responsible for the motor and sensory innervation of these two fingers.

This nerve travels through the forearm and that's why you had a numb feeling through the arm down into the thumb when the needle touched it. There was no problem for blood withdrawal because the pain and numbness was related to the manipulation of nerve and not vein.

Inability to perform the pinching action will confirm the diagnosis.Clinical evaluation by a physician is necessary to establish the extent of lesion and to decide the further course of treatment.

I hope this is useful to you.

Hello,
Welcome at HCM.

I have read complete details of your question.

It looks from your details that most probably there is injury to a nerve during withdrawal of blood.

It looks that this is ne of the minor injury as there is no associated weakness in your affected part of limb.

At present you should do following-

-Consult to a neurologist .

-He may advice you some tests like EMG OR NCV,These test are able to give you details about the grade of nerve injury.

-Use a splint as prescribed by your doctor. This can be a cock up or below elbow splint.

-Take nerve supplements like methylcobalamin or vitamin supplements.

Hope this all will help you.

With best wishes.

Hello. The swelling or bruising after the extraction can irritate the nerve and cause the symptoms you have, but usually disappear a few days after the extraction.
However, although it is something that happens very rarely would have to rule out nerve affection near the vein of blood extraction .
You must go to your doctor and he will request,if he seems it necessary, nerve conduction test
I wish you good health.
