hi welcome to Healthcare magic, lump on the palate could be due to numerous causes, but looking at the symptoms you are stating it seems to related to salivary glands situated on the hard palate, there are numerous minor salivary glands situated in the region of hard palate, or it could be due to any infection of the teeth of the upper jaw, they are normally slow growing, if you could click a few photos of the swelling and send the soft copy(dicom images of the ct scan if you have or click pictures of the ct scan , then i will be able to guide you better.

hi sara,
you got a hard lump on the palate, which is painless 3 days ago.............
it may be because of so many reasons like-infection of upper teeth, minor palatal salivary gland malignancy etc......
as you said you are a smoker it could be malignancy...
but do not get worried,go to an specialist(oral surgeon),and go for complete oral examination done...........
after final diagnosis follow all the instruction given........
and please go for a proper treatment....
one more thing please leave your habit of smoking,it is very harmfull for general body health as well as for oral health too..........
take care
