Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had an iv removed yesterday, and today there is a hard, painful, and swollen area (about the size of a large grape). The area is approx 1 above the actual insertion site and is progressively getting warmer. Should I be concerned about a blood clot since I was in for an HgB of 4.1 and had to receive 4 units of whole blood and iv iron?
It is probably extravasation - oozing of a little blood outside the vein. It gets organised and will be absorbed over time.
There is also possibility of thrombophlebitis - inflammation of the vein - from the cannula, medicine and so on. It also generally clears, when the cannula is removed. Rarely the thrombosis may become worse - see you doctor, if there is any change or worsening.
Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck
