Have Borderline Personality Disorder. Most Medicines Taken Are Too Strong, Gain Weight. Medicament For Losing Weight?

I have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. My doctor has tried an array or medications over many months; Many of which are too strong and I gain weight. I d like to ask my md is she can recommend a medication that has weight loss as a side effect to get off the weight I ve gained from other meds. Any suggestions?

Hi,

A person with borderline personality disorder is usually vulnerable to developing other psychiatric illnesses like depressive disorder and bipolar disorder etc. You have not mentioned the drugs you are on that are causing this weight gain, or the dosage.

Commonly used drugs like olanzapine and valproate cause weight gain. It would depend on what the reason is for receiving the drugs. There are alternatives which does not cause weight gain which may cause the gained weight to revert close to baseline. It is hard to recommend since you have not mentioned the precise reason for which drugs are being given.

Consult your psychiatrist, he/she can suggest.

Hope this helps,
Dr A Rao

There are medications that can help to reverse the weight gain.
You may ask your doctor who will guide you on this.
Certain medications can cause mood disturbances and may need to be avoided in your case.
