Have Cellulitis Near Implanted Titanium Pin. History Of Steroid Induced Diabetes
My husbands wound culture, cellulitis near a titanium pin implanted in his eyebrow area for a prosthetic, grew out raoultella ornithinolytica. Where d he pick this up? I know its rare. He is not diabetic. History of though steriod induced diabetic episode related to a mucor fungus of the sinus/ eye/ brain. This was three years ago.
Hi, Welcome to HCM. Raoultella ornithinolytica was previously called as Klebsiella ornithinolytica is a rod shaped bacteria which is very rarely isolated. There are probably very few cases which have been reported. This bacteria is found in guts of fish, termites and aquatic animals. These bacteria have known to cause fish poisoning due to its chemical properties. Probably infection could have occurred by consumption of fish or by termite bites. This infection has been seen in severely immuno-compromised patients. This bacteria is sensitive to action by antibiotics like levofloxacin and tigecycline. Thanks.
