Have Pain And Bruised Tailbone Due To A Fall

I fell two days ago and have hurt my tailbone. The area is very bruised and slightly painful. I had surgery 5 years ago for a slipped disc and am currently being treated for sciatica and lower back pain. I am wondering if I should see my GP in case this injury presents further complications. thank you Amanda

Hi,
This type of injury can be painful for a prolonged period. However, I do not consider it is necessary for you to see your doctor at the moment.
I suggest you take paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain. You may need to adjust your sitting position or use padded cushions to sit comfortably until it resolves.
If pain persists, you may wish to consider local anesthetic and steroid injections.
Regards,
Dr K A Pottinger,
MBChB FRCA.
