Have Problem Breathing At Night. Cheeks, Lips Flutter. Breathe Strangely. Have To Take A Deep Breath. Cure For Symptoms?

I have a problem breathing at night. I wake up sometimes and it seems like my cheeks flutter and my lips. It wakes me up. I breathe strangely and have to take deep breaths sometimes I don't seem to be getting enough air and have to stay calm until I can finally get the air I need into my lungs. Last night I had a dream my throat was clogged and I couldn't breathe and was trying to call 911. I had the fluttering in my cheeks and lips also. I'm always having to take deep breaths to fill my lungs with oxygen.

General & Family Physician Dr. Nsah Bernard's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

From your description you may be suffering from paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea/or PND (refers to attacks of severe shortness of breath and coughing that generally occur at night). Difficulty breathing at when sleeping/lying flat is known as orthopnea which could simply be relieved by sitting upright.
It may be caused in part by the depression of the respiratory center during sleep, which may reduce arterial oxygen tension, particularly in patients with interstitial lung disease and reduced pulmonary compliance.
In order to properly determine the most likely cause of the difficulty breathing a doctor would have to examine you by taking your history, examining you, running some tests including blood tests, Chest x-ray, cardiac ultrasound etc.
Ones cause is determined, a treatment can be initiated that can give you some relief.

Hope this helps
