Have Problems In Walking And Balance. MRI Done. What Stage Is The Disease?

What does T2W/Flair and iso tohyperintense on T1 W image involving the juxtaacrortical deep and periventicular white matter in the bilateral cerbral hemisphere means in layman s language It is a report on my daaughter s MRI that reads as follows and I want to understand the meaning as a lay person: The study shows mutiple discrete and confluent foci of altered signal appearing hyperintense on T2W/ FLAIR and iso to hyperintense on T1W images involving the juxtracortical deep and periventricular white matter in the bilateral cerebral hemisphere with involvement of the callososeptal interface (showing perpendicular orientation). Few similar areas of altered signal are also seen involving the left brachium pontis, left superior cerebellar pedunde, pons, left side of midbrain, medulla and bilateral posterior limb ofinternal capsule. On cemr no focal enhancing parenchymal lesion is seen. The normal flow voids are maintained the suici, ventricular system and basal cisterns are normal the pititary is grossly normal. No midline shift is seen. Both orbits, auditary meati and para nasal sinuses are normal I may mention here that my daughter has walking and balancing problems because of the intensity of the disease. Please advise whether disease is still progressing. She is on AVONEX Thanks.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

Your daughter is on interferon Avonex for possible Multiple Sclerosis.

As you have written in, the MRI findings show some changes in brain around the ventricles and deep white matter regions and the corpus callosum, superior cerebellar peduncle, pons, midbrain medulla and internal capsule. These areas are well known to be involved in MS.

Speaking about progressing disease, literature explains it as increase in number of involved areas in space and time. This must be compared with an older MRI and discussed with respect to each area involved.

Hope this helps
