Have Swollen Foot. Had Metatarsal Avulsion. No Medication Till Now. What To Do?
I broke my 5th Metatarsal Avulsion on my left foot 8 days ago. I have been in a splint since then. I take it off every two days so I can shower and put it back on. The past 4 days the top of my foot feels like its on fire and is very senstive to touch, air, water, heck you name it, it's senstive. My foot is still quite swollen, but the brusing has now made its way from the back part of my foot to the toes. Should I worry that I am having all of this pain and burning? I can't get into the ortho dr until I go back to the er. which might not be until next week. Or should I go now and explain this to them?
hello, as there is avulsion fracture of fifth metatarsal chances of compression fracture of talus bone is also common and in that case it may cause avascular necrosis which is decreased blood supply to that area.If there is more pain and restriction of movement you need to consult your doxtor immediately without late.In some cases may be due to malunion also you will get these symptoms.Thank you.
Make sure the splint is not tight... Swelling is due to tissue injury and will last several days / warm compress and Over The Counter (OTC) Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAID) will be useful in the meanwhile... Sensitiveness and burning may mean nerve irritation – and if severe, may benefit from local infiltration. If it is so bad, the wise option is to go to ER to exclude any complication...
Take care Wishing speedy recovery God bless Good luck
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM. I think there is nothing much to worry about your symptoms as they can be considered as Physiological (not abnormal). The swelling generally takes 10 days to subside, provided you keep the foot end in elevation most of the times in a day. This particular fracture should heal without any issues in a months time. Hope this helps
