Heart Fluttering After Pregnancy. Numbness In Limbs. Should I Be Concerned? Father Had Severe Heart Problems

I am 37 year old female no health problems . I noticed heart flutters with last preg., baby is now almost one and I have had the flutter or bubbling sensation in my heart this last week or so . Some numbness in limbs ( mostly arms)while sleeping unless I sleep on my back. I have never had blood pressure problems or anything else really. Should I be concerned, my dad has severe heart problems first heart attack at 34.

Thanks for writing to us.
1. A fluttering of heart (transient or episodic) is not a feature of heart attack. Instead it signifies a rhythm disturbance of heart. This may be benign or significant depending the type of rhythm.
2. First step is to know the type of rhythm disorder at time of fluttering which can be ascertained by getting an ECG at time of episode.
3. A heaviness of chest , behind breastbone, lasting for at least 2-3 minutes, usually associated with exertion is characteristic of anginal or heart attack related pain.

General & Family Physician Dr. Nsah Bernard's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

Normally during pregnancy there are some physiologic changes that might occur but those are usually temporary and always go away after pregnancy. If by heart fluttering you mean persistent palpitations then it is something you should get checked up by a doctor if possible a cardiologist.
With a family history of heart condition, it is better to be safe than to be sorry later. You might just be suffering from anxiety disorder with no cardiovascular lesion present. But doing an ECG and a heart ultrasound could help us be settled.

Hope this helps
