High Cholesterol Levels, Prescribed Medicines. Should I Do Exercise, Lose Weight Or Take Medication?

I'm a 75 year old generally healthy woman. I recently had a checkup & my cholesterol was 255. My doctor prescribed medicine 10 mg. In the past, my cholesterol was a little high, but my good cholesterol was very high. I have also gained about 20 lbs in the past couple of years. I ordered the meds, but am wondering if I should try to lose the weight & exercise.

Hello,
Thanks for the query to H.C.M. Forum.
You only mentioned 255 mg /dl ( cholesterol) , not mentioned lipid profile, ( detail about LDL ( bad cholesterol) HDL ( GOOD cholesterol),triglycerides ratio.
Doctor must have prescribed 10 mg tablets ( any lipid lowering agent), that's a good thing.
20 lbs weight gain is not good , try to reduce it , if possible.
Do regular exercises , if fit, than vigorous exercises will yield good result.
Don't take any type of stress, which increases cholesterol.
Hops I have answered your question.
If further any question I will reply.
Good luck.

if this is first occasion , you came across high cholesterol, then you should take a trial of three months with diet and life style changes: low fat diet, weight reduction and slowly reach up to moderate exercise , which you should do atleast 3-4 days in a week.
at the end of three months you should repeat lipid profile , if it is well e controlled then you continue that only and does not require medication, however if you fail to have controlled cholesterol then you need statin 5 mg or 10 mg , it needs to be individualized and may need change in dose time to time.
please dont forget that lifestyle and diet changes are essential and medication is not its alternative, medication is only adjuvant.
hope this helps you
