History Of Back Surgeries. When Jumped Felt Like Electrical Charge Shoot On My Leg. Have Back Pain. Thighs Are Painful. Treatment?

I ave had 2 back surgeries in the past, 1985, and 1997 for a herniated dis at or around the l-3 l-4 region. About 6 months ago I was at work and jumped off my truck and had a very pain full electrical charge type feeling shoot down both my legs and just about knocked me down. Since then I am having increasing pain in my lower back and both legs, down to my feet and my hips and thighs are very painful when I walk or even when I sit, and at times is deabilitating. Can you give me some help . Thank you, Rob

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

From the description, I am of the opinion that your sudden strain (jumping off a truck) might have caused a severe disc prolapse or rupture. This disc prolapse causes compression over the adjacent nerve roots which results in shooting pains down the legs.

I think you need a MRI scan to assess the extent of compression of the nerve roots.

The initial management of your problem will be as follows -

* avoid lifting heavy weights
* avoid forward bending activities
* Use a lumbosacral back support
* Intermittent pelvic traction
* Maintain optimum body weight,if you are obese
* Physiotherapy to strengthen your back muscles. Physiotherapy has to be done only after the acute pain has subsided.
* Judicious use of analgesics and muscle relaxants.

If all these measures fail to provide you relief, then surgical decompression may be an option.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
